🌱 Week 3, Day 21: Spotlight on Seasonal Produce

Welcome to Day 21 of the Balanced Plate Challenge! Yesterday you shared your plate with someone else — today, we’re letting nature take the lead. It’s time to build your balanced plate around what’s fresh and in season.

🍓 Why Seasonal Produce?

  • Better flavour: Fruits and veggies taste their best when they’re in season.

  • Nutrient boost: Produce harvested at peak ripeness often has higher vitamin and mineral content.

  • Budget‑friendly: Seasonal items are usually cheaper and more abundant.

  • Evidence‑based: Research shows eating seasonally can diversify your diet and improve overall nutrition.

🥗 Your Day 21 Task

At your next meal, choose at least one seasonal fruit or vegetable:

  • Winter: roasted root veggies like carrots and parsnips 🥕

  • Spring: asparagus or strawberries 🌸🍓

  • Summer: juicy tomatoes and sweet corn 🌽🍅

  • Autumn: squash, apples, or Brussels sprouts 🍎🎃

The goal isn’t to overhaul your entire plate — just highlight one seasonal star alongside your protein and grains.

😂 A Little Humour

If you’re not sure what’s in season, just ask your local market vendor. They’ll happily tell you… and probably throw in a recipe suggestion too. Free advice tastes almost as good as fresh strawberries.

✅ Reflection Prompt

At the end of the day, ask yourself:

  • Did the seasonal produce taste different from what I usually buy?

  • Was it easier or harder to find?

  • Would I make seasonal choices more often?
